Mason Bird is an undergraduate political science major who is also interested in business cyber security and other areas of technology. Also drawn to unusual pets, Mason Bird enjoys caring for his sugar gliders, sometimes referred to as miniature flying squirrels.
To properly care for sugar gliders, pet owners need to provide housing that allows the squirrels ample room to jump and glide. A minimum recommended cage size would be 2.5 feet x 1.5 feet x 3 feet. Wire cages are best; furnish it with a hamster-type water bottle, hanging food dishes, toys, and things to climb, such as branches or ropes.
Sugar gliders enjoy a healthy mix of food in their diet. Offer them a portion of fresh fruit or vegetables every day. Examples include pears, sweet potatoes, and cantaloupe. They also should be eating protein for about 50 percent of their food intake. Examples may include chicken or turkey, crickets, boiled eggs, and yogurt. Supplementing their diet with vitamins is also recommended.
